Google Pixel • Slow or full • 15–30 minutes

My Pixel storage is full — Google Pixel

Before you delete anythingDeleting a photo or file that was never backed up removes it for good. Before you delete anything, open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, and make sure it says the backup is complete. Files deleted in Files by Google sit in its Trash for 30 days; emptying the Trash makes the deletion permanent.
Photos, videos, and old downloads are what fill most Pixels. This guide shows you the storage breakdown, then uses the Files by Google app’s safe cleanup suggestions.
  1. Check for an Android update

Open Settings > System > Software updates > System update, then tap Check for update. Follow the on-screen steps if one is available.

  2. See what is filling the Pixel

Why: The Storage page breaks your space into categories, so you can clean up the biggest ones first instead of guessing.

What to do: Open Settings > Storage. Read the list: Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, and Documents & other. Tap a category to see what is inside it.

What to look for: The category using the most space. On most Pixels it is Images and Videos.

  3. Follow the Clean suggestions in Files by Google

Why: The Clean tab studies your Pixel and suggests files that are usually safe to remove, such as duplicate files, blurry photos, old screenshots, and very large files.

What to do: Open the Files by Google app and tap Clean at the bottom. Read each suggestion card, tap Select files or Review, look at every file with your own eyes, tick only the ones you are sure you do not need, then tap Delete or Move to Trash and confirm.

What to look for: Each card says how much space it will free. Never confirm a card you have not opened and reviewed.

  4. Free up space with Google Photos

Why: Free up space removes photos and videos from the Pixel only after they are safely backed up to your Google Account, so you keep every picture and still get the space back.

What to do: Open the Google Photos app and tap your profile picture at the top. Tap Free up space, read how much it will free, then tap Free up and confirm.

What to look for: Google Photos only offers this when the backup is up to date. Your photos still appear in Google Photos exactly as before; only the copies stored on the Pixel are removed.

  5. Delete old screenshots and downloads

Why: Screenshots and files downloaded from the internet build up quietly and are rarely needed again.

What to do: Open Files by Google and tap Browse at the bottom. Tap Downloads and delete files you recognize and no longer need. Then tap Images, open the Screenshots folder, and delete old screenshots the same way.

What to look for: Deleted files go to Trash in Files by Google and keep using space for 30 days. To get the space back now, open the Files by Google menu, tap Trash, and empty it after one last check.

  6. Check how much space you freed

Why: Comparing the free space before and after tells you whether you are done or need to keep going.

What to do: Return to Settings > Storage and read the amount of free space at the top.

What to look for: Aim for at least a few gigabytes free. A Pixel with almost no free space can slow down and fail to install updates.
