Phone will not charge — Apple iPhone

Safety firstStop charging if the iPhone swells, smells like chemicals, hisses, smokes, or becomes too hot to touch.
Change one part at a time so you can tell whether the Lightning or USB-C cable, power adapter, outlet, or iPhone is the cause.
  1. Check for an iOS update

If the phone can turn on and has enough battery to finish an update, check for one first. If it cannot stay on, continue to the next step. Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Update Now and follow the on-screen steps.

  2. Try the outlet and charging parts

Test another wall outlet. Then test a cable and Apple-compatible power adapter that charge another device.

  3. Inspect and clear the charging opening

Turn off the iPhone: open Settings > General > Shut Down, then drag the slider. Use a bright light to look for lint. If you see dry debris, use short, gentle bursts of compressed air from a can to blow it out. Keep the can upright, and do not put the straw, metal, liquid, or a sharp tool inside the opening.

  4. If the iPhone is hot, let it reach room temperature

Unplug it, remove the case, and let it sit indoors. Do not use a refrigerator or freezer.

  5. Restart and reconnect

Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. After it starts, connect the charger directly to the iPhone.

  6. Check Battery settings

Open Settings > Battery. If you see a charging-hold or temperature message, follow that message before testing again.
