Speaker or microphone is not working — Apple iPhone

Safety firstIf every recording sounds bad after restart, or trouble began after a drop or water, the iPhone may need repair.
Notice whether the trouble happens on calls, speakerphone, Voice Memos, videos, or every sound.

  1. Check for an iOS update

    Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Update Now and follow the on-screen steps.

  2. Disconnect Bluetooth audio

    Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off for this test.

  3. Set media volume

    Play a video, then press Volume Up. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider.

  4. Check the openings

    Remove the case. Use only a clean, dry, soft brush on the speaker and microphone openings.

  5. Test the microphone

    Open Voice Memos, record your voice, then play it. Next open Camera, record a short video with sound, and play it.

  6. Allow microphone access

    Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on access for the problem app.
